This is the classic bowl from Ray Allens book. It is constructed from curly maple, bloodwood, with turquoise accents in the feature ring. I entered the  piece in the 2008 Nevada County Fair, won a blue ribbon for woodturning, and "Best" in the amateur woodworking category.

This is from Malcolm Tibbets book on Segmented Woodturning. It is made from bubinga, with ebony and holly accents, and the feature ring is from bloodwood. This was my first effort at a very complicated Indian Blanket design that he outlines in his book.

My effort  involved  a variation on the necklace, and close inspection will show four longer points. The bowl is larger, being 9 " in diameter. The dark accent wood is wenge, with holly and turquois diamonds. The background wood is lacewood, which has a nice rich color, but a rather wild grain, as its name describes.

I made this out ofNigerian pearwood, holly and walnut. It is 5 " in diameter and 5 " tall. On the recommendation of a friend, I entered this is the wood sculpture category at the 2008 Nevada County Fair, and and it took a blue ribbon plus the Best of Division award.

This was an exercise in building the design ring in the collar, and the two feature rings. Originally I had planned to use some burl in the center of the two white rings, but the material I had turned out to  not be attractive, so I used the background wood, which is goncalo alves.
