I had visited the website of Jim Rodgers, a teacher of woodturning in Martinez, California. He had, at the time, a number of pieces  for which  he was focusing on shape. It inspired me to try to do this piece, which is done from lacewood ,ebony, and black veneer.

Another piece where I was interested in shape, and where I introduced the Holly slashes in between segments of the bowl. This is made from goncalo alves and holly. I made the bottom half of the vessel was made from a different board of gonvalo alves than the top half, and the difference is noticeable, and I now pay much more attention to wood selection.

My first effort at building diamonds with surrounding contrasting colors of wood. The piece is 10 " tall and 6 i" in diameter, and is constructed from purpleheart, holly, ebony, and turquoise. While the execution of the diamonds was ok, there is nothing very subtle about it.
